'GREAT' -  stands for

Goit River Environment Action Team.

A group formed in 2005 with the aim of exploring the opportunity to open up a culverted channel, 'the Goit' that runs from Withnell through Brinscall. This connects the Roddlesworth system of reservoirs at Abbey Village to the Anglezarke-Rivington System that supplies drinking water to the City of Liverpool.
